October 2022: macOS Software Update Changes

Starting in October of 2022 we will begin a phased roll out of requiring macOS software updates on all Bowdoin Apple computers.

Why the Change?

While we have always encouraged installing macOS software updates and upgrades we will now be required. This will ensure all Apple computers have access to the newest features while keeping them as secure as possible. This change also keeps Bowdoin-owned Macs in line with similar security changes that were made for Windows computers last fall.

How it works

  • Once Apple releases a software update you will have 7 days to install that update.
  • Updates will not be installed on a specific schedule because Apple doesn't release them on a schedule.
  • You'll be reminded throughout the day to install the update. You can either choose to defer or install.
  • If the update hasn't been installed within the 7 days, you will be forced to install the update.
  • Some updates will require a restart while others will not. Unfortunately there will be no way to know in advance as it varies depending on circumstances.
  • Most updates will take around 30 minutes to install, however if the computer hasn't installed updates for a long time, or never installed them, it will take longer.
