Forget a Saved Wi-Fi Network on Windows 11

Tags Windows-11

Description

  • Windows 11 laptop can not connect to the BOWDOIN or eduroam Wi-Fi networks

Environment

Recently updated Windows 11 computer.

Solution

If a Windows 11 computer can not connect to the BOWDOIN or eduroam Wi-Fi networks after an update, forgetting the saved wi-fi network and reconnecting may resolve the issue.

  1. Open Settings (press Windows + i) or click on the Windows menu icon and browse to the Settings app.
  2. Navigate to Network & Internet and click Wi-Fi then click "Manage Known Networks"
  3. In the "Manage Known Networks" menu, locate the BOWDOIN or eduroam wi-fi network and click the "Forget" button besides it.
  4. Navigate to Network & Internet and click Wi-Fi and turn the Wi-Fi slider off and then back on.
  5. Click "Show available networks", select BOWDOIN or eduroam and click the "Connect" button besides it.
  6. Click "Connect" to Continue connecting and then authenticate with your Bowdoin email address and password and press "Ok" to connect.

The reason this issue happens is that Windows 10 uses a security protocol of TLS 1.2 to encrypt wireless authentication data, however Windows 11 uses a more secure protocol of TLS 1.3. Unfortunately, there is no automated way to transition from one to the other without deleting the old network settings and re-connecting with the new settings.
