Classroom Tecnology Quick Tips and Etiquette

While complex, most classrooms have a standard set of general troubleshooting steps that clients can use to resolve most issues on their own. Below is a series of steps that can be taken for various situations.

Audio Issues

No Sound Coming From Instructor Computer

If you have no sound coming from the instructor computer, be sure that the output is set to the correct device. In most rooms with a touch panel, the sound output for the instructor computer should be set to Crestron. To verify, follow these steps:

  • Click on the Apple in the menu bar
  • Click on System Settings
  • Click on Sound
  • Under the Output tab on the sound pane, be sure to select CRESTRON. Since there are usually more than one Crestron listed, if you don't have any sound output, try selecting the other CRESTRON.

No Sound coming from Microsoft Teams or Zoom

Similar to no sound coming out of the system, you want to make sure Microsoft Teams or Zoom have the right output settings. 

If using the instructor computer

  • In Zoom, you'll want to have to have the output set to Same as System.
  • In Microsoft Teams, be sure the output is set to CRESTRON 

Remote attendees can't hear in Microsoft Teams or Zoom

This issue is often due to the wrong microphone being selected within your conference application.

Computer Issues

No login options shown on screen or is only shown on the projector or monitor

When a classroom technology system is first turned on, often times the instructor computer's display is not visible on both the touch panel monitor and the projector. This becomes obvious when the login screen for macOS appears to be missing on the touch panel's display. To fix this issue, press the Command key and the F1 key simultaneously to "mirror" the display of the Mac Mini to both the projector and touch panel/monitor.

Instructor computer is not on

If there is no small pulsing white light on the front of the Mac Mini after you try to wake it with the mouse or keyboard, then the computer is most likely off. You can power on the computer by pressing the power button which is located in the lower right-rear corner. Once pressed, after a few short moments, the computer should power on.

Note: The number and type of ports may vary from the ones shown above, however the location of the power button will not change.

Classroom Etiquette

Classrooms are used by various people in various disciples throughout the day. Classroom Technology, Desktop Engineering, and Service Desk staff work hard to ensure classrooms are in working order for everyone who uses the spaces. We ask that everyone who uses these spaces to do their part to ensure our classrooms keep working.

Below are some things that we ask everyone to pay attention to:

  • Don't power off the computer - When you're done your class, log out of the computer to protect your data and to ensure the computer is ready for the next person, but do not shut them down. 
  • Don't unplug anything from the computer - There should be no need to unplug anything from the instructor computer. An HDMI cable with a USB-C video adapter attached is available in every room to allow for personal laptops. In addition, wireless presentation via an Apple TV or Solstice Pod are available in many spaces. There should be no need to unplug anything.
  • If you do unplug something (why?), be sure to plug it back in exactly where you took the plug from.
  • Unless there's a class coming in right behind you, please shutdown the AV system by using the touch panel or shut down the projector if in a room that only has projection.
