Resolution
Bowdoin IT strongly recommends that all personal computer users protect their devices with antivirus software. While IT manages antivirus on Bowdoin-issued computers, we can only make recommendations for personal devices.
Windows
Microsoft Defender is built into Windows 11 and provides solid baseline protection at no cost. It updates automatically with Windows and requires no separate installation. For most personal Windows users, keeping Windows updated and leaving Defender active is sufficient.
macOS
macOS includes built-in malware protection (XProtect) that updates automatically. Keeping your Mac updated via System Settings > General > Software Update ensures you have the latest Apple protections.
Recommendation under review: Bowdoin IT is reviewing its recommendation for third-party Mac antivirus software. If you would like guidance on currently recommended options, contact the Service Desk at (207) 725-3030.
