Google Custom Search

Google Custom Search, an ad-free search engine that is available at no cost thanks to Google for Education, powers the bowdoin.edu internal site search. You can use our Google Custom Search if you skip the quicksearch feature of our site or if you search directly from https://www.bowdoin.edu/search.

Because our search is controlled by a third party (Google), we cannot control every aspect of bowdoin.edu search results. We cannot guarantee that a certain page result will appear (in any particular order); search results rely on algorithms that are controlled by Google.

However, there are some services we can use to improve our results. The Office of Communications and Public Affairs manages our Google Custom Search dashboard. Here are the types of requests you can make through our Website Service Request Form:

  1. Hide specific search results (by URL): We can hide specific search results by URL. If you want Google to "forget" a certain page or directory, we can put in that request.
  2. Add third-level domain: Our custom search can search any subdomain of bowdoin.edu. If you have a site you'd like to include in the bowdoin.edu search engine, you can request for it to be added. Examples of third-level domains that are currently included in our site search are books.bowdoin.edu, library.bowdoin.edu, learn.bowdoin.edu, and others.
  3. Add search promotion.
