Environment

This article applies to:

  • Bowdoin faculty, staff, and students
  • Bowdoin-issued MacBook Pro computers (macOS Sequoia 15.x or Tahoe 26.x) and Bowdoin-issued Windows 11 computers
  • The Print Deploy application, which is pre-installed on all Bowdoin-issued computers

To install a printer at the operating-system level on a computer that isn’t managed by Bowdoin, or to remove a printer through macOS System Settings or Windows Settings, see Remove a printer from Mac OS or Windows in the Related Articles section. For an overview of what Print Deploy is and how it differs from the PaperCut Client, see PaperCut Print Deploy in the same section.

Important: Printers can only be installed while you are on campus or connected to the Bowdoin VPN. Print Deploy needs to reach the PaperCut server to see the list of available printers.

Automated printer installation

Some printers are installed automatically based on your department, group membership, or building. These are typically printers intended for broad use by large groups on campus.

  • Auto-installed printers appear in the My Printers view in Print Deploy alongside any printers you’ve installed yourself.
  • You can recognize an auto-installed printer because the delete (trash can) icon next to it is crossed out. Auto-installed printers cannot be removed by the user.
  • Print Deploy checks in with the server periodically and updates itself automatically. You do not need to update Print Deploy manually.

If you want to force an update right now — for example, to pick up a newly assigned printer:

  1. Click the Print Deploy icon in the menu bar (macOS) or system tray (Windows).

Print Deploy icon in the macOS menu bar.

  2. Choose Refresh my printers now.

Print Deploy will contact the server and install, update, or remove assigned printers as needed.

Manually install a printer

Follow these steps to install a printer that isn’t auto-assigned to you.

1. Open and sign in to Print Deploy

  1. Find the Print Deploy icon:
    • macOS: in the menu bar at the top of the screen
    • Windows 11: in the system tray at the bottom-right of the screen, near the clock. You may need to click the up-arrow icon to show hidden icons.
  2. Click the icon and choose View my printers.
  3. If prompted, sign in with your Bowdoin username and password, then click Sign in and add printers.

Print Deploy sign-in window with fields for username and password.

  4. Optional: select Don’t show me this again to save your credentials on this computer.

2. Select and install a printer

Install Find-Me-Print first. The recommended first printer to install is the campus-wide Find-Me-Print queue. On macOS it appears as Find_Me_Print. On Windows 11 it appears as Find-Me-Print[Bowdoin](Mobility). Once installed, Find-Me-Print lets you print from any campus printer without having to pick a specific one in advance.
  1. In the Print Deploy window, select Add printers on the left.
  2. Find the printer you want by scrolling the list or using the search box.
  3. Click Install next to the printer name.

Print Deploy Add Printer screen with the Add Printer section and the Install button highlighted.

  4. Wait a few seconds for the installation to complete. The printer is now available in all of your applications’ print dialogs.

You can open Print Deploy and install additional printers at any time.

Windows users: Some printers, including Find-Me-Print[Bowdoin](Mobility), ask you to sign in again using your full Bowdoin email address (not just your username) and password.
