Environment

This article applies to all Bowdoin faculty, staff, and students using Zoom. Instructions cover the Zoom desktop app on Windows 11 and macOS Sequoia (15.x) or later, and the Zoom mobile app on iPhone and iPad. Virtual backgrounds require meeting specific hardware and software requirements — see the link in Additional Resources if your background does not appear.

Resolution

The Office of Communications and Public Affairs has created a set of Bowdoin-branded virtual backgrounds featuring campus buildings, classrooms, and landscapes. Download any background from Bowdoin's custom Zoom background portal before following the steps below.

Set a Background on the Zoom Desktop App (Windows or Mac)

  1. Open the Zoom desktop app and sign in.
  2. Click the Settings gear icon icon in the upper-right corner of the Zoom window.

  3. In the Settings window, select Backgrounds & Filters.
  4. Click one of the preset thumbnails to apply it, or click + to upload your own image or video.
To blur your background: Select the Blur option in the Backgrounds & Filters panel instead of choosing an image.

Set a Background on iPhone or iPad

  1. Download a background image from Bowdoin's custom Zoom background portal to your device's Photos app.
  2. Join or start a Zoom meeting.
  3. Tap More in the meeting controls.
  4. Tap Virtual Background.
  5. Tap a preset background to apply it, or tap + to upload an image from your Photos. The background applies immediately.
  6. Tap Close to return to the meeting.
