Environment
This article applies to Bowdoin faculty and students using the Azure Virtual Computer Lab for coursework or research. The virtual lab is accessible from macOS, Windows 11, or iPad devices with the Windows App installed, from any internet connection on or off campus.

Resolution
First Time Setup
To connect to the virtual lab for the first time, follow the device-specific instructions in How to Access an Azure (Microsoft) Virtual Desktop in the Related Articles section. Choose the steps for your device — iPad, macOS, or Windows 11.
Using a new classroom or device? You will need to complete the first-time setup steps once for each classroom computer you use, and separately for your own personal computer.
Reconnecting After Initial Setup
After completing first-time setup, follow these steps each time you return to the virtual lab:
- Open the Windows App.
- Click or tap the Workspaces tab.
- Double-click the lab computer you want to connect to.
- Sign in with your Bowdoin credentials when prompted.
Things to Know About the Virtual Lab
- Access from anywhere: You can connect from any device with internet access — including from home. No VPN is required.
- Persistent settings: Bookmarks, data, and other settings you configure in the virtual lab are saved between sessions.
- Session timeout: There is a 4-hour timeout for active sessions. If the environment is not actively used for 4 hours, you and your students will be automatically logged out.
