Questions
- What is the Jamf Self Service app?
- Where is the Self Service app on my Mac or iPad?
- What software is available in Self Service?
- How do I install an app from Self Service?
- What is the equivalent to Self Service for Windows?
- Why don't I see an app that I expect in Self Service?
Environment
The Self Service app is available on all Bowdoin-issued Apple computers and iPads.
Note: While the Self Service app may be available on all macOS machines, the software available will vary from device to device, depending on the computer role and the person logged in to the app. For example, applications available in Self Service for Bowdoin-assigned individual workstations will be different than applications available on managed lab or classroom workstations.
Warning: The Self Service app for macOS and for iPadOS is only available on Bowdoin-owned and Bowdoin-managed devices. It cannot be installed on any personal laptop, iPad, or iPhone. This ensures that licensed software does not get installed on devices where it is not allowed.
Windows equivalent: The equivalent software to Self Service for Windows devices (PCs) is the Company Portal app (see the Company Portal app in the Related Articles section).
Resolution
The Self Service app provides Bowdoin-licensed and some freely available apps without the need for administrator access.
Using the Self Service app to install software
- To open the Self Service app, click Finder, select Applications, then open Self Service.
- You will see available licensed and free software that is packaged and made available to the Bowdoin community.
- On the left side there are categories as well as a search feature.
- To install an application, search for or scroll through the software available and click the Install button under the application icon.
- For most software, clicking the Install button will immediately begin installing the software. The button will change to Installing and a progress indicator will appear to indicate that the process is working.
- When the software has completed installation, the button will change to Reinstall and the program will be listed in your Applications folder.
Note: If you do not see an application that you are assigned, or expect to see, tap or click Log In in the lower-left corner and sign in with your Bowdoin username and password. Some apps may be assigned to you as an individual and not to your device directly.
MDM approval needed? If you receive a message when opening Self Service that you must approve your organization's Mobile Device Management (MDM) profile, see How to Accept Enrollment of your Bowdoin Mac into MDM in the Related Articles section.
What software is available in Self Service
There are dozens of software titles available in Self Service. Application availability will vary depending on a person's role with the college (student, faculty, staff) as well as what the device (computer or iPad) is used for.
The best way to learn what is available is to open the Self Service app on the device, click Browse to open the sub-menu, and choose All. All apps will be listed in alphabetical order.
