Environment

This article applies to instructors recording a class or meeting in a Bowdoin classroom equipped with a PTZ (pan-tilt-zoom) camera connected to the instructor's computer. The PTZ camera must be connected before opening Panopto Express.

  • Browser required: Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome — Safari is not supported by Panopto Express
  • Panopto account: Required to save recordings — sign in with your Bowdoin username and password

Resolution

  1. Open Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome on the instructor's computer.
Do not use Safari. Safari is not compatible with Panopto Express and will display an error when you attempt to record.
  2. In the browser address bar, go to panopto.com/record-now.
  3. When prompted, allow the browser access to your camera and microphone. You must grant these permissions to proceed.
  4. Select the PTZ camera as your video source and confirm your microphone or audio source is selected.
  5. Click Record to begin recording.
  6. Conduct your class or meeting as usual. During the recording you can:
    • Share additional screens or applications
    • Switch cameras or microphones
  7. When finished, click Stop to end the recording.
  8. Save your recording. Choose one of the following options:
    • Save to Panopto — sign in with your Bowdoin username and password to save directly to your Panopto media library
    • Download locally — saves the recording as a file on the computer
    • Upload to YouTube — if you have a connected YouTube account
Tip: Saving to Panopto is recommended if you plan to share the recording with students through Canvas. See Upload and Embed Panopto Videos in Canvas in the Related Articles section.
