Setting up a Microsoft Team for your Canvas course

Environment

This article applies to faculty enabling the Microsoft Teams integration in a Canvas course. The integration allows faculty and students to navigate directly between Canvas and their Teams class team.

  • Platform: Any supported browser on a Mac, Windows PC, or iPad
  • Audience: Faculty and instructors
  • Requires: An active Canvas course and a Bowdoin Microsoft 365 account

Resolution

  1. Open the Canvas course where you want to add Microsoft Teams.
  2. Select Settings from the course navigation menu.

  3. Select the Integrations tab at the top of the Settings page. (The Integrations tab appears after you select Settings.)

  4. Under the Microsoft Teams Sync section, turn on the toggle to enable Microsoft Sync.

  5. Select the Navigation tab. Locate Microsoft Teams in the list of disabled items at the bottom, then drag it up into the enabled section (or click the Vertical ellipsis icon, often used for more options or a menu. icon and select Enable). Click Save when done.

  6. Select the Microsoft Teams link that now appears in your course navigation to launch the integration.

  7. Select your class team tile to open it in Microsoft Teams on the web, desktop, or mobile app.
Activate the team for students: Before students can access the class team, you must activate it. After completing the steps above, open Teams and activate the class team from within the Microsoft Teams interface.
