Environment
This article applies to all Bowdoin College students, faculty, and staff who want to download a text transcript from a Panopto video. Transcripts are only available for videos that have captions — Panopto generates captions automatically when a video is uploaded. The transcript can be downloaded without timestamps as a plain text file.
Resolution
You can download a transcript from any of three places, depending on how you are viewing the video.
Option 1: From the interactive Panopto viewer
- Open the video in the full Panopto player at panopto.bowdoin.edu.
- In the left-hand panel, click the Captions tab to open the captions list.
- At the top of the captions panel, click the Download transcript (or printer/download) icon.
- Choose to download without timestamps to receive a clean, readable text file.
Option 2: From the embedded viewer (e.g., in Canvas)
- Open the embedded Panopto video in your Canvas course or web page.
- Click the Captions (CC) icon in the video player controls.
- Look for a transcript or download option in the captions menu that appears.
Note: The transcript download option may not appear in all embedded player views. If you don't see it, open the video directly in Panopto using the full-screen or pop-out option and use Option 1 above.
Option 3: From video settings (video owners only)
- Sign in to panopto.bowdoin.edu.
- Locate the video in your folder and click the Edit (pencil) icon.
- In the editor, click the Captions section in the left-hand menu.
- Use the download option to export the captions as a text file.
How you can use the transcript
- Post to Canvas as an alternate way for students to engage with lecture content
- Add to existing notes or study materials
- Translate into another language using a translation tool
- Search and review specific content from a long recording
