Environment

This article applies to Bowdoin College faculty and staff who want to redirect incoming calls using call forwarding or simultaneous ring (Also Ring). Both settings are configured in Teams and apply across all your devices.

  • Desktop app: macOS (Sequoia 15.x, Tahoe 26.x) and Windows 11
  • Mobile app: iOS and Android
  • Desk phone: Teams-compatible Poly phone
  • Related: To ring a group of people simultaneously (office coverage), see Configure Teams Calling for an Office Environment in the Related Articles section. To share your line with a delegate, see Delegate Your Teams Phone Line to Another Person in the Related Articles section.

Resolution

Call forwarding — send all calls to another number or voicemail

Call forwarding redirects all incoming calls away from your Teams devices to a destination you choose.

Desktop app (Mac or Windows):

  1. Click the ellipsis (…) next to your profile picture in the upper-right corner of Teams.
  2. Click Settings, then click Calls in the left menu.
  3. Under Call answering rules, click Forward my calls.
  4. Choose a forwarding destination:
    • Voicemail — sends all calls directly to voicemail
    • New number or contact — enter a Bowdoin colleague's name or any phone number. For external numbers, include 1 and the area code (e.g., 12077253000).
    • Call group — ring a configured group of people

Mobile app (iOS or Android):

  1. Tap your account icon in the upper-left corner of the Teams app.
  2. Tap Settings, then tap Calling.
  3. Tap the toggle next to Call forwarding to turn it on.
  4. Tap Contact or number and search by name or enter a number (starting with 1 and the area code for external numbers).
Tip: When setting up forwarding on the mobile app, Teams may ask for permission to access your phone's contacts. In most cases you should decline — Teams already has the full Bowdoin directory, so you don't need to share your personal phone contacts with the app.

Desk phone (Poly):

  1. Tap your account icon in the upper-right corner of the phone screen.
  2. Tap Settings, then tap Calling.
  3. Tap Call forwarding to toggle it on.
  4. Tap Forward to and choose Voicemail or Contact or number.

Also Ring — ring a second number simultaneously

Also Ring causes a second phone number to ring at the same time as your Teams devices when you receive a call. Unlike forwarding, calls still ring your Teams devices — the second number rings in addition.

Also Ring vs. Call Group: Also Ring rings one additional number alongside yours. If you need calls to ring multiple colleagues in your office, use the call group feature instead — see Configure Teams Calling for an Office Environment in the Related Articles section.

Desktop app (Mac or Windows):

  1. Click the ellipsis (…) next to your profile picture and select Settings.
  2. Click Calls in the left menu.
  3. Under Call answering rules, click the Also ring dropdown (default shows No one else).
  4. Select New number or contact and enter a name or phone number.

Mobile app (iOS or Android):

  1. Tap your account icon, then tap Settings.
  2. Tap Calling, then tap Off next to Also ring.
  3. Tap Contact or number and enter the name or number.

Desk phone (Poly):

  1. Tap your account icon, then tap Settings > Calling.
  2. Tap Also ring, then tap Contact or number.
  3. Search by name or enter a number (include 1 and area code for external numbers).
