How to manually install Microsoft Windows patches or upgrades

Issue/Question

  1. How can I manually install Windows patches instead of waiting for automatic installation?
  2. How do I run Windows Update on my computer?

Environment

Microsoft will release what are known as "Quality Updates" at least once a month, usually on the second Tuesday of that month. Bowdoin configuration will require that updates attempt to install every Friday afternoon at 4:00 PM. You do not have to wait until Friday to allow the updates to install as it is possible to install the updates on your own. This is highly recommended, especially if you don't want to be caught off guard and have your work computer install patches in the middle of a meeting or presentation!
