Environment

This article applies to faculty, staff, and students at Bowdoin College who have been issued a MacBook Pro with a built-in Touch ID sensor. The steps described are intended for users who wish to enable fingerprint authentication for tasks such as unlocking the device, as a factor with Okta for single sign-on, authorizing app installs, accessing system settings, and using Apple Pay or autofill features in supported browsers.

Resolution

  1. Turn on your MacBook Pro and log in using your account password.
  2. Click the Apple menu in the top-left corner of your screen, then select System Settings (or System Preferences in earlier versions).
  3. In the left-hand menu, scroll down and select Touch ID & Password.
  4. Enter your Mac password if prompted to make changes.
  5. Click Add Fingerprint.
  6. When prompted, place your finger (usually a thumb or index finger) on the Touch ID sensor, typically located in the top-right corner of your keyboard or part of the power button.
  7. Lift and place your finger repeatedly as guided on-screen. Try to adjust the angle slightly each time for better overall recognition.
  8. Once the fingerprint is saved, you can choose what you want to use Touch ID for by toggling the options available, such as:
    • Unlocking your Mac
    • Apple Pay
    • iTunes & App Store purchases
    • Safari autofill
  9. To add additional fingerprints, repeat steps 5 through 8. The system allows up to three fingerprints per user account.
  10. Close the settings when you're done. You can now use Touch ID for authorized tasks on your MacBook Pro.
