Environment
These instructions apply to all Bowdoin College students, faculty, and staff using college-issued or personal iPads with iOS 12 or later. A working Wi-Fi connection and enough iCloud storage for your backup are required. Restoration is typically needed if you are setting up a new device or after erasing your iPad.
Resolution
- Ensure your iPad is connected to Wi-Fi and plugged into a power source.
- Open the Settings app, tap your name at the top, then tap iCloud.
- Select iCloud Backup and make sure it's turned on. Tap Back Up Now to start a manual backup. Wait until the backup finishes; stay connected to Wi-Fi the entire time.
- To check your last backup, return to iCloud Backup and look for the time of your last successful backup.
- To restore your iPad from an iCloud backup (usually after erasing your device or setting up a new one):
- Turn on your iPad and follow the on-screen setup steps until you reach the Apps & Data screen.
- Select Restore from iCloud Backup, and sign in with your Apple ID.
- Choose the backup you want to use from the list shown. Make sure your device remains connected to Wi-Fi. After the process completes, your settings and content will restore.
- If you see a warning about not having enough iCloud storage, you may need to free up space or upgrade your iCloud storage.
