Environment

This article applies to all full-time, eligible Bowdoin faculty and staff positions that require a computer as part of their role. Computers are replaced on a four-year cycle.

  • Who: Full-time faculty and eligible staff
  • What: Standard computer hardware options and peripheral offerings
  • Note: A laptop is the default. Desktop computers (iMac or Dell All-in-One) are only provided upon request with supervisor approval. If currently assigned a desktop, it will be replaced with a laptop at the next upgrade cycle.

Computer options

Some departments may not have a choice between macOS and Windows due to software requirements. Check with your department before requesting a specific platform.

Apple — MacBook Pro

  • 14" MacBook Pro. The 16" model may be considered based on individual requests.
  • A laptop case is included
  • For primary workstation use: a single external monitor, keyboard, and mouse are available

Windows — Dell Latitude laptop

  • 14" Latitude. The 15.6" model may be considered based on individual requests.
  • A laptop case is included
  • For primary workstation use: a single external monitor, docking station, keyboard, and mouse are available

Additional peripherals

All standard configurations include a single monitor. The following additional items can be requested through the CAP process, subject to department and senior officer approval and available budget:

  • Monitor arms
  • Additional power adapters (laptops)
  • Additional batteries (Dell laptops)
  • External hard drives
  • External speakers
  • Non-standard keyboards or mice
  • Power strips
  • Battery backups or UPSes

Additional peripheral requests are the financial responsibility of each department. Items can be requested by submitting a service request through Technical Purchasing — all items are charged back to the department.
