Network File and Folder Permissions

What This Service Is

Information Technology maintains hundreds of shared network folders used by faculty, staff, and students every day, each protected by strict security controls. To use one of these folders, you need permission granted for your account — and when someone changes roles or leaves a team, their access should be removed to keep the folder secure. This service handles both: requesting access and removing it.

Who It's For

Any current faculty, staff, or student may request access. Approval from the folder's owner or data steward is required before access is granted or removed.

How to Get Started

Choose the option that matches what you need:

  • Request Network Folder Access — to be granted access to a shared network folder.
  • Remove Network Folder Access — to remove your own or someone else's access to a folder, for example when a person changes roles or leaves a team.
Know the folder path if you can. Telling us the exact folder location (for example, the drive letter and folder name) helps us find the right folder and the right owner faster.

Not What You're Looking For?

  • If you need access to an application rather than a folder, use Application Access.
  • If you need access to a shared mailbox or calendar, that has its own request under Email, Calendar & Scheduling.
  • If you need access to a Box folder, that's handled under File Management & Storage.
  • If you manage an Active Directory group and want to add or remove members yourself, use Self-Service: Manage Active Directory Groups.

Service Promise

There are no costs associated with folder access. Most requests are responded to within 2–3 business days, with resolution in 3–5 business days depending on owner approval. For current Service Desk hours and contact options, see Technology Support Options and Hours in the Related Articles section.
