Request Wired Static IP/DNS/DHCP

Use this request to

Request a static IP address, a DNS hostname (for example, instrument.bowdoin.edu), or a DHCP reservation for a device or system that needs a consistent network address.

Justification required. Fixed addresses and hostnames are assigned only when there's a clear need. Be ready to explain why the device requires one so Network Operations can review and approve the request.

When to Use This

Use this offering when:

  • A lab instrument, departmental server, or specialized device needs an address that doesn't change
  • A service needs a friendly DNS name so people or systems can reach it reliably
  • Licensing or equipment requires a reserved address tied to its hardware

When NOT to Use This

Don't use this offering if:

  • You just need a working network jack — use Activate or Install a Network Jack
  • You need a public web address or a certificate for a website or service — use Request a Domain Name or DNS Record or Request a TLS (SSL) Certificate
  • You're registering a printer, phone, or building device for network access — use Register a Wired Device for Network Access

Before You Submit

Have ready:

  • The device or system name and what it does
  • The device's MAC address (required for a DHCP reservation)
  • A preferred hostname, if you're requesting DNS
  • Where the device lives (building and room)
  • The business or research justification, and the sponsoring department

What Happens Next

Network Operations reviews the request, including the justification, before assigning an address or name. You may be contacted for technical details. You'll be notified once the assignment is in place.
