Environment

This article applies to faculty creating Canvas assignments that collect Panopto video or audio submissions and using SpeedGrader to review and grade those submissions.

  • Platform: Any supported browser on a Mac, Windows PC, or iPad
  • Audience: Faculty and instructors
  • Requires: Panopto integration enabled for your Canvas course (enabled by default at Bowdoin)
  • Student instructions: See How to submit a video or audio assignment to your Canvas course (Students) in the Related Articles section

Resolution

Create a Video Submission Assignment

  1. Navigate to your course in Canvas and select the Assignments tab in the left-hand menu. Click the + Assignment button in the top right to create a new assignment.
  2. In the assignment editor, fill in the assignment name and add instructions in the text box. Consider including directions for students on what to record and how to submit — for student submission steps, see How to submit a video or audio assignment to your Canvas course (Students) in the Related Articles section.
  3. Set the Submission Type to Online, then set the submission method to Text Entry. This gives students access to the Panopto embed tool in the rich content editor.
  4. Click Save at the bottom to save the assignment, then click Publish to make it visible to students.
Why Text Entry? Setting the submission type to Text Entry enables the Panopto icon in the student's rich content editor toolbar, which is what students use to upload and insert their video or audio file.

Review and Grade Student Submissions

  1. Navigate to the assignment and click SpeedGrader in the upper right corner.
  2. Each submission will display an embedded Panopto video. Click the play button to watch the student's recording directly within SpeedGrader.
  3. Enter a grade in the grade field and add any comments, then move to the next student's submission.
