Environment

This article applies to anyone using the Microsoft OneDrive sync client on a Windows or macOS computer with a Bowdoin account. Every computer has standard folders such as Desktop, Documents, and Pictures that might not be included in OneDrive. Backing up these folders to OneDrive protects them and makes them available across all devices.

Resolution

Turn on folder backup in OneDrive on Windows

  1. Open OneDrive settings: select the OneDrive cloud icon in the notification area, select the Settings gear icon, and then select Settings.
  2. Go to the Sync and backup tab.
  3. Select Manage backup.
  4. To start backing up a folder, toggle any folder that says Not backed up, and then select Save changes.

To enable backup of the important folders (Desktop and Documents) on macOS, first launch the Privileges app and select Request privileges, then complete the following.

  1. The macOS device must have Full Disk Access enabled for OneDrive. Go to System Settings > Privacy & Security > Full Disk Access and enable OneDrive in the list of applications.

  1. Select the OneDrive cloud icon in the menu bar, select the Settings gear to open the menu, and select Preferences.
  2. Go to the Backup tab.
  3. Select Manage backup.
  4. To start backing up a folder, select any folder that does not say Files backed up, and then select Start backup.
