Environment

This article is for Bowdoin students, faculty, and staff who have set up Okta Verify on the computer or device they are signing in from. If you have not, see Set up Okta Verify on an additional device first.

  • Computers: Bowdoin-issued Mac (macOS Sequoia or later) or Windows 11 computer, in any web browser
  • Mobile devices: iPhone, iPad, or Android device with Okta Verify set up
  • Services: any Bowdoin service that uses the Bowdoin Okta sign-in page

Resolution

What Okta FastPass does

Okta FastPass is part of the Okta Verify app. You still sign in with your email address and password. Then, instead of approving a push notification on your phone, you confirm it is you on the device you are using, with Touch ID, Face ID, Windows Hello, or your device PIN.

Bowdoin uses Okta FastPass because it is faster for you and harder for attackers to misuse. A fake sign-in page cannot use Okta FastPass, and a stolen password alone is not enough to sign in.

Sign in with Okta FastPass

  1. Go to a Bowdoin service, such as Workday. The Bowdoin sign-in page opens.
  2. Enter your Bowdoin email address and select Next.
  3. Enter your password and select Verify.
  4. When asked to choose a security method, select Use Okta FastPass instead of Get a push notification.
  5. If your browser asks whether to open Okta Verify, select Open Okta Verify. To skip this question next time, check the box to always allow it first.
  6. When prompted, confirm with Touch ID, Face ID, Windows Hello, or your device PIN.

You are signed in.

Tip: On a device without Okta FastPass, choose Get a push notification instead and approve the sign-in on your phone.

If Okta FastPass does not work

  • Nothing happens when you select Use Okta FastPass: Okta Verify may not be running. Open the Okta Verify app, then go back to the sign-in page and try again.
  • Okta FastPass is not in the list of security methods: Okta Verify is not set up on this device. See Set up Okta Verify on an additional device.
  • You are not offered Touch ID or Windows Hello: Check that a fingerprint, face, or PIN is set up on the device. On a Mac, go to System Settings > Touch ID & Password. On Windows, go to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.
  • Okta FastPass stopped working after you got a new computer or reinstalled Okta Verify: Set up Okta Verify again on that device.
  • You see a message that your device does not meet requirements: Contact the Service Desk. Your device may need an update or may not be eligible for Okta FastPass.
