Manage a Microsoft Distribution Group you own

Environment

This article applies to Bowdoin faculty and staff who own a Microsoft 365 Distribution Group and need to add or remove members.

Distribution groups are Bowdoin-only. Only Bowdoin email addresses (@bowdoin.edu) can be added as members of a Distribution Group. Resolution

Access the Distribution Group management portal

  1. Sign in to Outlook Online at outlook.office.com using your Bowdoin email address.
  2. Click the gear icon in the upper-right corner to open Settings.
  3. In the search box at the top of the Settings panel, type Distribution groups and click the matching result.
  4. In the Distribution groups settings page, click the link to Manage distribution groups to open the management portal.

Add or remove members

  1. In the management portal, under Distribution groups I own, find and click the group you want to edit.
  2. In the group details panel, click Members to view the current member list.
  3. Click View all and manage members.
  4. To add a member: click Add members, search for the person by name or email address, select them, and click Add.
  5. To remove a member: select the member's name, click Remove, and confirm.
Changes take effect within a few minutes. After saving, allow up to 5 minutes for the changes to propagate across Microsoft 365.
