Prevent unauthorized access

There are simple ways to set up and protect your computer from viruses, malware, and other unauthorized access: 

  • Install anti-virus software
    • While Bowdoin does not offer anti-virus for home use, we do recommend Avast Security for Home or most other major anti-virus application
  • Enable application firewall
    • To enable, go to System Preferences > Security (& Privacy) > Firewall > "Turn on Firewall" or "Start"

Use Strong Passwords

Follow our guidance to create a strong password for you and your Mac.

Lock your screen

Lock your screen when you are not at your computer. Go to the Apple menu and choose Lock Screen or press Command+Control+Q

To automatically lock the screen when the screen saver turns on, click Apple menu > System Preferences > Security & Privacy. Click the General tab and select the option to require password after sleep or screen saver begins.
