Environment
This guide applies to users running any version of macOS where an app is being blocked because it wasn't downloaded from the official App Store or an identified developer. You might encounter this if you're trying to open an app you trust but macOS gives you a warning or blocks it altogether.
Resolution
CAUTION: Before bypassing this security block, be very sure that the app you want to use is from a trusted source and free from viruses and spyware or you could compromise your data and your laptop.
- Attempt to open the app. If you see a message saying the app is blocked, click Cancel".
- Open System Preferences by clicking on the Apple logo in the top left corner of your screen and selecting System Preferences.
- Go to Security & Privacy. If needed, click the lock icon in the bottom left corner and enter your password to make changes.
- In the General tab, you will see a section at the bottom that mentions the blocked app. Click on the Open Anyway button next to it.
- A confirmation dialog will appear. Click Open to confirm you'd like to launch the app.
- The app will now open, and in the future, it should run without any blocks or warnings.
By following these steps, you can allow the app to run while ensuring it's one you trust. macOS blocks unknown apps to protect your system, so always double-check the integrity of the app before overriding the block.
