Environment

This article applies to Bowdoin College community members and others who do not have an Apple ID and need to back up or restore an iPad using a Mac. The instructions are for users with macOS Catalina (10.15) or later, as iTunes has been replaced by Finder for device management. You should have access to a Mac with available storage and the USB cable that came with your iPad.

Resolution

  1. Connect your iPad to your Mac using its USB cable.
  2. Open Finder. In the sidebar, look for your iPad under "Locations" and select it. If prompted, trust the device and enter your passcode.
  3. To back up your iPad:
    • Under the "Backups" section, select "Back up all of the data on your iPad to this Mac".
    • For extra security, check "Encrypt local backup" and create a password you'll remember. This helps keep your backup protected.
    • Click "Back Up Now". Wait until the process finishes before disconnecting your iPad.
  4. To restore your iPad from a backup:
    • Connect your iPad to your Mac and open it in Finder as above.
    • Under the "Backups" section, click "Restore Backup".
    • Choose the backup you want to use from the list. If your backup is encrypted, enter your password when prompted.
    • Click "Restore" and keep your iPad connected until the process is complete.
  5. You can confirm your backup was successful by viewing the "Latest Backup" date and time in Finder under the "Backups" section.
