How to install Microsoft Office 365

Information

Microsoft Office 365 is available to all current faculty, staff and students. It can be installed on both Bowdoin-issued and personal computers.

Versions for macOS and Windows 11 are available and include applications like Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. It also includes OneDrive for data storage and many other apps.

Office is part of the Microsoft 365 suite of tools. You can access the productivity apps such as Word and Excel on your computer by following the instructions below or you can access them from anywhere as long as you have Internet access by using Microsoft 365.

Installation

Install on a Bowdoin-issued device

The Microsoft Office 365 apps can be installed on Bowdoin-issued devices using the right tool for each system.

For macOS

Use Self Service to install Microsoft Office 365.

For Windows

Use the Company Portal app to install Microsoft Office 365.

Install on a personal device

To install Office for Mac or Windows

  • Go to https://portal.office.com
  • Log in with your Bowdoin user name and password
  • Once logged in, in the upper right, directly above the application tiles, click on Install and More
    • You will get a drop-down. Select Install Microsoft 365 apps to download the application installer for the apps that come with the Office Professional Suite made for the computer you are logged in to.
    • Select Other Install Options to choose a different language or to switch between 32 and 64-bit versions of Office. We recommend the 64-bit version for most uses.
  • The installer will start to download and additional instructions will be displayed.
  • Once downloaded and installed, open any of the applications (except Outlook) and click Sign-in
  • Sign in with your Bowdoin user name and password to authorize the applications.
