Step 1 - Confirm backup of old computer

Skip this step if you are not restoring data from a previous Bowdoin computer.

On your old computer, launch Druva InSync from the Applications folder.   You should see Backup Complete and a Last Successful Backup date.  If a more recent backup is needed, click Backup

Note the size of your backup in the lower right corner of the Druva InSync window.   Plan on a restore rate of 50GB per hour while connected to Ethernet on campus.

Step 2 - Setup your new macOS computer

Apple Setup Assistant walks you through the steps needed to enroll your computer, set a local computer password and configure the operating system and apps.

Please be patient and read the prompts carefully. The setup process has periods of pause built in to it by Apple so pages may not progress quickly.

  • YOU MUST BE CONNECTED TO THE INTERNET TO COMPLETE THIS PROCESS
    • Connect to any wireless network during setup or use an Ethernet cable and the USB-C multi-port adapter included with the peripherals.
  • Connect your Mac to a power source.
  • Power on laptop.
  • Follow Apple Setup Assistant prompts.
  • When prompted, Enroll in Bowdoin's Remote Managent (MDM)
    • Complete sign-in at Bowdoin's Okta sign on page.
  • Setup Assistant will ask you to provide a password for your computer account.
    • This computer account is not associated with your Bowdoin username/password and will not change when you update your Bowdoin email password.
    • Your computer password can be updated in System Preferences.
    • You may keep your computer password and Bowdoin email password in sync.
  • Continue though the Setup Assistant until the Desktop opens.
    • Notifications will display as Bowdoin software is installed.

Step 3 - Restore your data

Skip this step if you are not restoring data from a previous Bowdoin computer.

Once the Desktop loads, launch Druva inSync to "Replace Existing Device" and "Restore" data to the new computer.

See Restore your Druva inSync data to a new device.

Please Note:

  • The restore can be done from any internet connection, but we recommend being on campus ethernet because of the high-speed connection.
  • Data restore will begin after indexing is complete.   This may take up to 30 minutes.
  • Restore time depends on the amount of data being restored.
  • The computer can be restarted during the restore and it will continue after indexing.
  • Your old computer will stop backing up when the restore begins on the new computer.
