How to turn off "Find My" and sign out of iCloud on an iPad or iPod Touch

In order for an Apple mobile device, such as an iPad, an iPod Touch or Apple Watch, to be used by someone else, there are specific steps that need to be followed.

Preparing an iPad or iPod Touch for use by someone else

In order to prepare an iPad or an iPod Touch to be used by someone else, follow the series of steps below

Turn off "Find My" and Sign out of iCloud

  • Tap the Settings app from the home screen
  • At the top of the Settings screen, click on the User's name (it may say Apple ID, iCloud, iTunes, & App Store or any combination under the name)
  • Scroll down and tap on iCloud
  • Scroll down again and tap on Find my iPad (or Find my iPod Touch)
  • Tap the slider into the "Off" position. You will be asked the user's iCloud password at this point. Have them enter that information
  • Back up 2 screens until you are at the screen with the User's name once more.
  • Scroll to the bottom and tap on Sign Out
  • If asked, enter the Apple ID password once more.
  • The device can now be turned in to IT to be erased and prepared for the next user.

Erase/Remove device passcode

  • Tap the Settings app from the home screen
  • Scroll down to "Face ID & Passcode" or "Touch ID & Passcode"
  • Enter your device passcode when asked.
  • Scroll down and tap Turn Passcode Off
  • Follow any on-screen prompts to disable your passcode.
