How to manage what email is sent to the Junk folder

Bowdoin's spam filters scan all emails coming into our network and move items that appear to be junk mail to your Junk folder. Other spam, or phishing attacks may stay in quarantine while others never even make it to our mail servers. You can make sure that the spam filters always deliver or always move emails from a specific address or domain to your Junk folder.

To set the spam filter to always deliver specific emails to your inbox

  1. Navigate to outlook.office.comand log in with your Bowdoinusernameand password.
  2. In the top right corner, click the gear icon (Settings). Navigate to the bottom of the list and click "Mail" under the "Your app settings" section.
  3. In the pane on the left, expand Mail - Accounts
  4. Click on Block and Allow


     
  5. Under Safe Senders and Recipients, enter the email address that should always be delivered to your inbox. Then click the Add (+) icon to add it to the list of safe senders.

Note: At this time, there is no real method for allowing an entire email domain to bypass your junk email folder. For example, if you want all emails from anyone at Globex to be allowed through the spam filter, you will need to set a rule for each individual. Although Microsoft says this feature is available, our testing shows that this is not available to us at this time.

  5. Scroll to the bottom half of the screen and, under blocked senders, enter the email address that should always be blocked by the spam filter. Then click the Add (+) icon to add it to the list of blocked senders.

Note: If you want all the emails from an organization to be blocked by the spam filter, add the domain instead of a specific email address. For example, if you want all emails from anyone at Globex to be blocked by the spam filter, add globex.com to the list of blocked senders instead of mary_johnson@globex.com.
