Environment

This article applies to Bowdoin faculty, staff, and students who host or co-host Zoom meetings. Cloud recording is available on the Zoom desktop app (Windows 11 and macOS Sequoia 15.x or later), the Zoom mobile app (iOS and iPadOS), and the Zoom web app. Only the host or a co-host can start a cloud recording.

Resolution

Recordings go to Panopto, not Zoom. Bowdoin Zoom cloud recordings are automatically transferred to Panopto after processing. They do not remain in Zoom long-term. Any email links Zoom sends after a recording finishes will not work — go to Panopto directly to view and share your recordings.

Record from the Desktop App (Windows or Mac)

  1. Sign in to the Zoom desktop app and start or join a meeting as the host.
  2. In the meeting toolbar at the bottom of the window, click the Record record button button.
  3. Select Record to the Cloud.
  4. A recording indicator appears in the upper-left corner of the meeting window while recording is in progress.
  5. To manage the recording during the meeting:
    • Click Stop Recording stop recording button to end the recording.
    • Click Pause Recording pause recording button to pause temporarily. Click it again to resume.
    • Ending the meeting also stops the recording.
Co-host recordings: Recordings started by a co-host will appear only in the host's recording list in Zoom — not in the co-host's account. The host will receive the processing notification and can share the recording from Panopto.

Record from a Mobile Device (iPhone or iPad)

  1. Open the Zoom app and start or join a meeting as the host.
  2. Tap the Record button in the host controls toolbar. If you do not see it, tap More first.
  3. Tap Start Recording. A recording indicator appears in the top-left corner of the screen.
  4. To pause or stop the recording, tap the Record button again and select Pause Recording or Stop Recording.
Local recording not available on mobile. Mobile devices can only record to the cloud. Local recording (saving directly to the device) is not supported on iOS or iPadOS.

Record from the Zoom Web App

  1. Go to bowdoin.zoom.us, sign in, and start or join a meeting.
  2. In the meeting toolbar, click More, then click the Record button.
  3. Select Record to the Cloud.
  4. To stop recording, click Stop Recording or end the meeting.

After the Meeting

Once the meeting ends, Zoom processes the recording — this may take several minutes for longer sessions. The recording is then automatically transferred to Panopto. You do not need to remain in the meeting for processing to complete.

You will receive an email from Zoom when processing finishes. The links in that email point to Zoom's servers and will not work once the recording has been moved. Log in to Panopto directly to view and share your recording.
