Issue/Question
- I received an iPad from Bowdoin and I don't have the Self Service App.
- The Service Desk said that my iPad isn't enrolled, how do I fix that?
- I need to get Bowdoin apps, but was told the iPad isn't enrolled correctly, how can I fix it?
Environment
Bowdoin-issued iPads are usually automatically enrolled in the Jamf MDM solution used to manage and maintain all Bowdoin iPads. Unfortunately, sometimes an iPad doesn't exist in the system and, during initial setup, doesn't get enrolled. This could affect both student and faculty iPads.
Resolution
The fix is not complicated, but it is complex and it requires a call to the Service Desk to coordinate a major step. You can contact the Service Desk by phone from 8:30 - 5:00 EST Monday - Friday when the college is open at (207) 725-3030.
Backup your iPad
You will want to back up your iPad if you have any data on it you will want to keep. This process will require a complete erase of the iPad. You can backup your iPad to iCloud using your Apple ID or to your computer if you plug your iPad in to your computer and allow iTunes to create a backup.
We recommend backing up to iCloud as it provides a more consistent backup and restore experience overall and will create a backup automatically every few days when your iPad is plugged in and locked.
To create a backup, or confirm you have a current backup:
- Open the Settings app
- Tap on your Apple ID at the top
- Tap iCloud
- Scroll down the list under the heading of "APPS USING ICLOUD" and at the bottom of the list, tap iCloud Backup
- You will see "Back Up Now". You can tap that to immediately create a backup. You can also see the date and time of your last backup underneath the link.
Contact the Service Desk to erase your iPad
While you can erase your iPad on your own, there is a step in the process that requires you to enter the email address and password for activation and that address is tied to the college. It is more efficient to contact the Service Desk and request a remote wipe with an activation unlock in order to prepare your device.
Call the Service Desk and in most cases, the remote wipe will take place in just a few moments.
Note: Your iPad must be connected to wireless for this process to take place.
Follow the prompts for setup
Once erased, your iPad will go back to its initial setup screen. Follow the prompts, setting your iPad up once more. You be asked to log in with your Bowdoin username and password. If you never get asked to log in, please contact the Service Desk for assistance.
Pay attention during the setup process. You will have an opportunity after you log in to restore from backup. This will allow you to log in to iCloud and restore from the backup you created in step 1.
