Most Common Questions

Step 1 — Confirm backup of old computer

Skip this step if data is not being restored from a previous Bowdoin computer.

Before the new computer is set up, confirm that the old computer's backup is complete using Druva inSync. For instructions, see Sign in and start backing up with Druva inSync in the Related Articles section.

  1. On the old computer, launch Druva InSync from the Applications folder.
  2. Confirm the status shows Backup Complete with a recent Last Successful Backup date. If a fresher backup is needed, click Backup.
  3. Note the size of the backup in the lower-right corner of the Druva InSync window. Plan on a restore rate of approximately 50 GB per hour when connected to Ethernet on campus.

Step 2 — Set up the new macOS computer

Internet required: The computer must be connected to the internet throughout this process. Connect to any Wi-Fi network during setup, or use an Ethernet cable and the USB-C multi-port adapter included with the peripherals.
  1. Connect the Mac to a power source.
  2. Power on the laptop.
  3. Follow the Apple Setup Assistant prompts carefully. Some screens may pause for a moment — this is expected.
  4. When prompted, enroll in Bowdoin's Remote Management (MDM).
  5. Complete sign-in at Bowdoin's Okta sign-on page.
  6. When asked to create a computer account password, use your Okta password. Desktop Password Sync (configured in Step 5) will keep the computer password in sync with the Okta password going forward.
  7. Continue through Setup Assistant — including setting up Touch ID — until the desktop appears.
  8. Notifications will display as Bowdoin software is installed automatically. Allow this process to complete before proceeding.

Step 3 — Restore data

Skip this step if data is not being restored from a previous Bowdoin computer.

  1. Once the desktop loads, launch Druva inSync.
  2. Select Replace Existing Device, then choose Restore to begin transferring data to the new computer. For full instructions, see Restore your Druva inSync data to a new device in the Related Articles section.
Restore tips: The restore can be done from any internet connection, but campus Ethernet is recommended for the fastest transfer. Data restore begins after an indexing period of up to 30 minutes. The computer can be restarted during the restore and it will resume automatically. The old computer will stop backing up once the restore begins on the new computer.

Step 4 — Install apps from Self Service

The following apps are pre-installed and do not need to be reinstalled: Self Service, Microsoft Office, OneDrive, Teams, Druva inSync, and Cisco Secure Client (VPN).

Additional software can be self-installed using Self Service for macOS. See Self Service for macOS and iPadOS in the Related Articles section. Only reinstall software that will be used regularly. The Privileges app may be used if administrator credentials are needed to change settings or install applications not listed in Self Service.

If a Bowdoin-owned application is needed and is not listed in Self Service, contact the Service Desk technician assigned to the CAP ticket.

Step 5 — Launch apps and sign in

After the data restore completes, reboot the computer and configure the following:

  1. Desktop Password Sync for macOS — when the Registration Required notification with the Okta logo appears in the top-right of the screen, click Register. See How to Setup Desktop Password Sync for macOS in the Related Articles section.
  2. PaperCut Print Deploy Client — sign in to set up campus printing. See PaperCut Printing Quick Reference Guide in the Related Articles section.
  3. OneDrive — set up the sync client. See How to setup the OneDrive sync client in the Related Articles section.
  4. Microsoft Outlook — configure for Bowdoin email. See How to setup Microsoft Outlook for Mac for Bowdoin email in the Related Articles section.
  5. Microsoft Teams — sign in. See How to log in and get started with Microsoft Teams in the Related Articles section.
  6. Default email client — set Outlook as the default if desired. See Setting up a default email client in the Related Articles section.

Step 6 — Monitor and peripheral setup

To identify cables and ports, see Cable Connection Types in the Related Articles section.

  1. Connect the monitor to the multi-port adapter (or directly to the laptop if applicable) using the HDMI cable included in the peripheral box.

Dual monitor setup on a 14" or 16" MacBook Pro: Connect one HDMI cable to the multi-port adapter and the second monitor directly to the laptop. The monitor box may include a Display Port cable — this is not needed for a single-monitor setup.

Step 7 — Schedule a follow-up with the Service Desk

Contact the Service Desk technician assigned to your upgrade, or use their Bookings link to schedule a follow-up appointment for any remaining issues and to arrange a date for the old computer and peripherals to be picked up. Old devices must be returned within 2 weeks.
